Can Eating More Vegetables and Fruits Make You Look More Attractive?

We all know that eating fruits and vegetables is good for our health, but did you know eating them can also influence the color of your skin? According to a recent study by the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, increasing your intake of these foods may give your skin a new glow.

Consisting of two experiments, the researchers gathered thirty five Caucasian participants to investigate the effects of fruit and vegetable consumption on skin color and human perception. In the first experiment, participants chose various fruits and vegetables to eat during a six week period, some eating more than others. Using a spectrophotometer to measure the skin color of each participant throughout the experiment, researchers found that many of their complexions were more red and yellow in color, with a stronger shift towards yellow, by the end of this six week period compared to the beginning. Researchers noted these skin color changes were more likely to occur when one to three more servings of fruit and vegetables were eaten a day.

In the second experiment, the perception of what’s considered healthy and attractive was investigated. Images of participants were digitally altered to exhibit more yellow tones in their complexion consistent with varying levels of fruit and vegetable consumption. Displaying the digitally altered images next to the untouched images, volunteers rated the yellowness in each face, how healthy they looked, and how attractive they looked. The results of this experiment showed that skin tones more yellow in color from fruit and vegetable consumption may be perceived as healthier and more attractive, even at relatively modest levels of dietary change.

This color change in complexion is linked to carotenoids, a natural pigment found in carrots, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes, and other foods. Consuming these fruits and vegetables is not only good for our health, but may give our skin a glow considered healthier and more attractive looking. Although more research needs to be done, scientists are hopeful these potential effects on appearance will influence consumers to ditch unhealthy eating habits and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet.
