World Metrology Day 2015 Dedicated to Light Based Technology
Towards the end of 2014 this year, 2015, was designated by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be The Year of Light. The purpose of this designation was to create a global initiative to highlight the use and necessity of light in our daily lives. As a result, this year has been filled with a number of events centered around light and its many uses.
Coming up on May 20th, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom will be dedicating their event, World Metrology Day, to this UNESCO initiative. World Metrology Day’s theme this year will be based around how metrology (the science of how things are measured) relates to light-based technologies.
This begs the question: How are light and metrology linked? The very basic principle behind the relationship between light and metrology is that more accurate measurement methods mean greater efficiency in both measuring light and producing light-based technologies. When metrological science and light science harmonize, they create greater energy efficiency. As a result, researchers are able to create better performing instruments, products, and improve energy conservation efforts.
In fact, World Metrology Day organizers hope to increase awareness regarding how metrology and light-based technologies hope to transform and improve the growing energy challenges, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
During the event there will be a series of short lectures on subjects like: how the National Physical Laboratory uses light to measure a range of items from distance to time, how we are using lasers to see sound, and additional information about the NPL’s TRUTHS Project which hopes to use the sun as a reference in order to improve climate change models. NPL will also be opening up some of its laboratories to give demonstrations to those attending, like their Dimensional, Time & Frequency Labs.
