Materiais naturais, como o algod\u00e3o e a l\u00e3, por exemplo, tendem a produzir uma tonalidade amarelada, que muitas vezes precisa ser alterada pela ind\u00fastria. Uma tonalidade amarelada \u00e9 normalmente associada \u00e0 falta de qualidade de um produto, como por exemplo, envelhecimento ou sujeira for\u00e7ando as ind\u00fastrias a criar produtos com uma apar\u00eancia mais branca.<\/p>\n<p>O branqueamento \u00e9 um processo que remove quimicamente as cores dos materiais, resultando em uma reflet\u00e2ncia espectral mais uniforme. Agentes de branqueamento \u00f3pticos, ou fluorescentes, tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o utilizados para compensar a tonalidade amarela, criando assim a apar\u00eancia de um \u201cbranco mais branco\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Os branqueadores \u00f3pticos absorvem a energia do espectro eletromagn\u00e9tico na \u00e1rea de UV, n\u00e3o vis\u00edvel, (principalmente abaixo de 400 nm) e emitem essa energia em comprimentos de onda entre 400-480nm. Isto resulta em curvas de reflet\u00e2ncia que podem subir acima de 100% entre 400-480nm, fazendo o material parecer levemente azulado. Como o olho percebe os materiais ligeiramente azulados como tendo uma distribui\u00e7\u00e3o espectral mais uniforme, portando mais claras, o uso desses corantes \u00e9 frequentemente utilizado para adicionar brancura a produtos e s\u00e3o normalmente utilizados pela ind\u00fastria t\u00eaxtil e de papel. O &#8220;branco&#8221; n\u00e3o \u00e9 compat\u00edvel com o que consideramos como &#8220;cor&#8221;, uma vez que essas sensa\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o independentes uma da
