Com uma amostra opaca, o espectrofot\u00f4metro usa uma fonte de luz para iluminar o objeto e, em seguida, captura a luz refletida. Por exemplo, com uma amostra de tinta roxa, a amostra \u00e9 iluminada e, em seguida, a luz refletida \u00e9 medida; no entanto, nem toda a luz que ilumina a amostra \u00e9 refletida, portanto, \u00e9 a combina\u00e7\u00e3o de luz refletida e absorvida em v\u00e1rios comprimentos de onda que produz uma cor espec\u00edfica que vemos, como a amostra de tinta roxa. A f\u00f3rmula mais popular \u00e9 <a href=\"\/br\/learning-center\/color-measurement\/cie-2000-color-difference-formula\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIE L*a*b*, <\/a>que representa:<\/p>\n<p>L* \u2013 Luminosidade indo de preto para branco em uma escala de 0 a 100 com 0 sendo preto e 100 sendo branco.<br \/>\na* \u2013 Representa o eixo vermelho e verde; vermelho e verde s\u00e3o cores oposta.<br \/>\nb* \u2013 Representa o eixo amarelo e azul, novamente cores opostas.<br \/>\nAs equa\u00e7\u00f5es da f\u00f3rmula L*a*b* produz 3 coordenadas de cor para calcular a posi\u00e7\u00e3o da cor em um espa\u00e7o tridimensional. Com utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o dos dados desse espa\u00e7o de cor bem como suas diferen\u00e7as (conhecidas como deltas) pode-se comparar duas cores a partir de seus dados absolutos. Simplificando, se as coordenadas n\u00e3o corresponderem, as amostras n\u00e3o s\u00e3o da mesma cor.
