Up and Coming Display Technology Innovations
2014 has been a major year for display technologies. Quantum dots greatly increase the performance of LCDs through a creative use of quantum physics. When quantum dots are integrated into the backlight of the LCDs they produce highly saturated primary colors similar to those produced by OLED displays. Additionally, quantum dots improve both power efficiency and brightness by converting light from blue LEDs into highly saturated narrow band primary colors for LCDs. The added benefit to quantum dots is that the colors produced are precisely tunable during manufacture. This means that they can produce exact colors for extremely high images and picture color accuracy, while eliminating white point errors and lopsided color gamuts. Quantum dots have revitalized LCD technology for at least the next 5 years with a number of new LCD smartphones, tablets and TVs now integrating this amazing technology.
Similarly, the use of very bright low reflectance high ambient light displays has also helped to increase display quality. All screens act as mirrors that reflect light and everything that is illuminated in front of them, including indirect indoor and outdoor sunlight. Before very bright low reflectance high ambient light displays were used, many screens would have degraded image contrast, washed out on-screen colors, and interference that makes seeing on-screen images difficult. This is because screens were highly reflective and not bright enough to combat the effects of ambient light. Now manufacturers are introducing displays that are very bright and are not as reflective. This means that the image and color problems caused by ambient light in older displays are very much lessened. Another feature of some of these displays is their ambient light sensors, which accurately helps reduce screen brightness and vary the display’s color gamut and Intensity.
It has definitely been a productive year for those in display technology as even more of these innovations become commonplace. These advancements and trends only highlight much more urgently the necessity for good LED and light measurement equipment.
