July Newsletter
3D sensor technology has developed into a ‘game-changer’ for smart products using vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) as efficient light sources. VCSEL-based sensor technology supports applications such as AI, internet-of-things (IoT), and AR/VR technologies. It also simplifies the integration of smart systems into our everyday chores. However, because VCSELs have special properties, their characterization is more complex than that of other typical laser sources.
The use of this photonic technology is also reaching galactic boundaries! As unprecedented high speed intra-satellite data transfers used in space communications grow rapidly so does the need for increased research of VCSEL applications for next generation spacecrafts.
Learn more about the challenges of spectral measurement of laser diodes with a defined error budget and traceability by visiting our VCSEL industry page and watch an interactive VCSEL video highlighting Instrument Systems GmbH's portfolio of VCSEL instruments.

June Newsletter- Lighting
Summer solstice is recognized and celebrated worldwide by many cultures. This year summer solstice will occur on June 21st 2022. This is when earth's rotation has the North Pole at its maximum tilt toward the sun, making it the longest day of the year, and allowing us to enjoy the sunlit day a little longer. But did you know that on the opposite side of the world, the southern hemisphere recognizes the June solstice as indicating the start of winter? There the sun is at the lowest point in the sky and is considered the shortest day of the year. Some companies are recreating 'windows' that duplicate the daylight sky through the use of lighting so that no matter where your location or your climate is you will be able to tune into a sunlit drenched day using an 'indoor window'. To read more about this read our blog "Here Comes the Sun!" and see how Instrument System's CAS-120 Array Spectroradiometer instrument along with EOP-120 Optical Probe is used in measuring these LED systems.
Feeling a Post Lunch Dip?

The displays of immersive virtual reality (VR) devices generate images in an extremely broad field of vision. Today some VR glasses cover the entire horizontal field of vision of the human eye. To enable realistic measurements, an imaging system must therefore capture all areas of the virtual image.
The close proximity of the display to the eye also magnifies display defects, making them more prominent to the wearer. At the same time, the resolution of these displays is constantly increasing, with the aim of creating an illusion that is as near as possible to reality. To ensure reliable results, measuring instruments require excellent resolution, if possible at pixel level.
The more similar the measuring instruments mimic the human eye, the better the entire field of vision and the relevant defects can be recognized. Wish to learn more about the role of pupil-size spot measurement?

Under-Screen Camera Display Measurement
Today many smartphones use front-facing cameras as part of the full-screen display, positioning the camera behind the screen. This configuration requires two different pixel configurations to exist on the same display, making display gamma correction more complicated.
This advancement in seamless displays which includes a front-facing camera that sits behind the display, requires instruments that can measure and accommodate this new technology.
Read about existing challenges and solutions in the measurement of these Under-Screen Camera Applications.

Laser diodes have become indispensable in many industries. They have led to new and exciting applications and technologies, including facial and gesture recognition in consumer electronics, LiDAR (light detection and ranging) in cars, and material processing using high-performance diode lasers. VCSELs (vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers) are replacing EELs (edge-emitting lasers) within these new applications and technologies. Instrument Systems, a division of Konica Minolta Sensing, characterizes VCSEL arrays, including polarization analysis.
A question asked by many is, how to measure VCSEL arrays? By measuring VCSEL single emitters and arrays in the near and far-field, one can characterize VCSEL pulses, spectra, power and now even polarization. However, measuring systems for laser diodes must satisfy particular requirements. Learn more about these requirements and the challenges of spectral measurement of laser diodes with a defined error budget and traceability by visiting our VCSEL industry page.

When determining a measurement an important question is "Are we really measuring the just area we believe we are measuring?" If you do not have faith in the measurements, obtained then the value of the data given will be of little use. It is important to know that the repeatability and accuracy of an instrument is consistent so that the overall cost of errors reduced to a minimum. Once such way is thru using instruments that hold ISO certifications.
When you obtain calibration service of ISO-17025 from Konica Minolta, your instrument will have the calibration standards and tools associated with the ISO-17025 calibration process and are certified by ISO-17025 accredited metrology labs. You will also receive a statement of uncertainty included in the calibration certificate, giving you a higher degree of certainty of how much the reported calibration data of the device tested may vary from the known actual value of the calibration standard measured.

November 2021 Newsletter
In the last few years UV-LEDs have become an attractive alternative to conventional UV lamps. They are now smaller, inexpensive and can be used more efficiently extending its usage in applications such as water treatment plants, air sterilization, hardening, coating, surface inspection or lighting for indoor gardening.
It is necessary for the spectral properties of the UV-LED to be sufficient for the respective application being evaluated. Accurate knowledge of the emitted spectrum of UV-LEDs are required during the production process for each individual UV-LED.
Due to the sensitivity of UV-LEDs, test methodology plays a key role in providing accurate measurements. Reliable and accurate measurement of the radiant flux of UV-LEDs calls for extremely sensitive optical measurement systems for precise radiometric characterization. Instrument Systems GmbH is pioneering this area of spectral measurements.
Instrument Systems provides a measurement system consisting of an integrating sphere with PTFE-coating and a highly precise spectroradiometer for fast 24/7 quality control.
