Chroma Meters / Colorimeters

What is a Colorimeter?

A Colorimeter or Chroma Meter is an instrument used to measure the color of an object. It determines the concentrations of primary colors within an object to create an exact color signature. To maintain color quality control and ensure samples fall within color tolerances set by a user.

How does a Colorimeter Work?

They are tristimulus instruments used primarily for Quality Control applications. Tristimulus means that they have three color filters red, green, and blue. The instrument has a light source, which directs a beam of light to an object and then bounces back, meaning that the light passes through these colored filters.

From these light wavelengths, the device can measure values to determine the color of an object.

What does a Colorimeter measure?

Handheld colorimeters are very flexible in their uses across a wide range of industry-specific needs. There are many applications in the food industry; we have a range of instruments that are specialist equipment for measuring particular items such as coffee or tomatoes.

We have several resources to help you find out more about colorimeters. You can find out more about the uses of a colorimeter in our blog. Suppose you want to discover how our clients are using these products. In that case, you can read our case study on how peanut butter is measured to ensure quality consistency throughout the manufacturing process.

Curious if you need a colorimeter or a spectrophotometer. Both instruments measure color; however, they are quite different. We explain the differences in our blog.

The type of colorimeter required is dependent on what is measured. If you are unsure which product is right for you, contact us to help you find the right product for your needs.
